Breakfast in the Park January 31, 2009 The first event in the park for the 2009 Social Committee started
off a little shakey with the cool temperatures and brisk wind. The cool temperatures and brisk winds did not deter 90
of the faithful members and guests, determined not to let Mother Nature rule, even though some people wanted to cancel it
the day before. First
we want to thank Richard Van Acker and Looney
Electric for the use of their boom truck to replace the yard light above the sidewalk. The boom also
provided views of the park and boat ramp never seen before. The day started with several members hanging tarps on two sides of the pavilion
to block the wind and another member brought his patio heater to keep it toasty warm. The continental breakfast, juice,
and hot coffee was really a big hit with everyone. A great time was had by all and when asked if we should have it again,
there was a resounding YESSSSSSSSS echoing off the tarp walls. One of the best parts of the
event was it did not cost POGC a penny (well maybe a little for electricity for the coffee pots) as three members paid for
the entire affair. Our generous members did not ignore the donation jar as their donations will give us a good financial
start for our next event. By inviting everyone from the community, it resulted in at least six new members and maybe more. See
you at the Flea Market in March which we hope will be a bigger success than this one was. Click here to view pictures.
Seawall Work Party March 7, 2009 We had a good turnout of manpower for the maintenance on the
seawall. An 8:00 AM low tide gave us about a 3 hour window to climb over the wall and seal cracks. Jean Memmenga
made a pot of coffee and Pat Johnson brought donuts, orange juice, and water for the guys. The tide came in and chased
us out around 11:00 AM. Thanks to Ron Kubala, Bob Ohm, Randy Roberson, Rick Peleske, Tony Heller, Mike Donohue, and
Tom Johnson (all Fishing Club Members) for their work efforts. While there, Linda Pollock sold another spot for the
Flea Market and Jean Mennenga sold a Boat Ramp Decal. All in all it was a very productive morning. Thanks again
everyone.
Boat Club Cruise to Nav-A-Gator Grille March 8, 2009 Mother Nature blessed
us with a gorgeous day for the trip to the Nav-A-Gator Grill on the Peace River. 10 boats departed from the Gulf Cove
Boat Ramp at 11:00 AM. The trip was rather uneventful until we reached the sailboat regatta in Charlotte Harbor
just before the 41 bridges. After slowly winding our way around them we got on plane after the I-75 bridges and all
boats made Nav-A-Gators in about an hour and a half. There was plenty of dock space for everyone and also plenty of
seating for lunch and drinks. All boats made it back to Gulf Cove safely and some boaters continued to unwind with munchies
and drinks at the Gulf Cove Park Pavilion. What a great time! Thanks Mike Donohue for all your hard work in organizing
the trip and leading the way. We can't wait for another event. Click here to view pictures.
Flea Market in the Park March 14, 2009 With Mother Nature providing the most perfect day, the Social
Committee pulled off another very successful event in the Park. Before dyabreak our work crew and vendors showed up
at the Gulf Cove Park to set up for the long awaited Flea Market. At first light the 30 vendors were set up and our
volunteer crew had converted the shed into a very professional concession stand with customers lined up for their morning
coffee, sweet rolls, and mini bagels. Our traffic control crew did an awesome job of organizing the parking. The
flow of traffic in and out was as smooth as silk. Great Job Guys. Soon the smell of hot dogs and popcorn from the concession stand
brought a continous flow of hungry shoppers for an early lunch. Most of the bargain hunters were done by the time the
early afternoon heat set in and it was a good thing because the concession stand sold out of hot dogs and chips. The POGC booth had a successful
day of sales thanks to the items donated by the residents of Gulf Cove. Thanks to Becky Wirth and Bubbles Burress for
maning the booth all day. Ron Wozniak did a great job of selling the remaining grille raffle tickets. We also
sold some memberships and boat ramp decals. Vendors and buyers were already talking about having another one, as the
park is a perfect venue for the Flea Market. Thanks to our hard working volunteer crew for the overwhelming success of the event. Thanks
to Linda Pollock, Jean Mennenga, Becky Wirth, Bubbles Burress, Pat Johnson, Tom Lamoreaux, Tony Heller. Carl Strong, Dave
Cormier, and Ron Wozniak. Click here to view pictures.
Swing Set Installation
April 3, 2009 The new
swing set has been installed at the Park. Thanks to Chuck Lockwood for the use of his cement mixer and his labor.
Also thanks to Rick Peleske, Tony Heller, and Tom Johnson for their labor as well. Great Job guys!!!! Click here to view pictures.
Easter Egg Hunt in the
Park April 11, 2009 With the weather cooperating and several members showing up
we began by stuffing hundreds of plastic multicolored eggs with candy. Next we undertook the monumental task of hiding
them all arount the park for the kids to find. We didn't get much of a rest break for it wasn't long that the kids started
showing up. As more and more kids came the excitement started to build. When the Easter Bunny showed up the hunt
began. Thanks to all of our members for donating so many stuffed animals and toys for prizes, every child received
a prize. It was very gratifying to see all the volunteers that came out to help with this worthwhile event. As
you can tell from the last couple of pictures our crew was exausted after all was said and done. And as usual words
are so inadequate, so we will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Click here to view pictures.
Boat Club Cruise To The Riviera Restaurant May 3, 2009 The Boat Club
left the Gulf Cove Marina with 6 boats around 11:00 AM Sunday morning for the Riviera Restaurant across Charlotte Harbor in
Punta Gorda. The water was a little rough, but as true mariners that we are we pressed on. We arrived a little
after 12 noon and rafted the boats two by two at the restaurant's dock. All 28 members and guests were warmly greated
by the staff and were seated at two long tables overlooking the water. Mike Donohue did it again by organizing the trip
and making sure the restaurant new we were coming. Those making the trip were: Rick & Sue Peleske, Leo Peleske
& Joy King, Cliff & Theresa Lamson, Roger & Joann Young, Billy & Carolyn Wallace, John & Diane Strauss,
Marie LaRosa, Bill Moran, Chuck & Esther Lockwood, Paul & Sandy Krisher, Tom & Pat Johnson, Tony Heller &
Jean Mennenga, Lou & Elaine Spacco, Mike & Jean Donohue, and Walter & Mary Ann Makar. Everyone had a really
good time. Click here to view pictures.
Mothers Day Breakfast
in the Park May 9,2009
Well, the POGC Social Committee just keeps on having successful events every month at the park pavilion.
Today we had over 50 members and guests for breakfast, which consisted of scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, sweet rolls,
croissants, fruit cups, juices, and coffee. Oh yes, Linda and Tom even had their cappauchino machine there. UUUMMMMM
Good!!! All Mothers received a red and white carnation. All the guys donated $2.00 to eat with their wives.
Most everyone would like to do a breakfast every month. Thanks to Linda Pollock and Tom Lamoreaux, Becky and Tom Wirth, Angela and Matt Cicchella,
Pat Johnson, Mike Donohue, and friend and neighbor Dean Ruger for all their help in setting up, cooking, and serving. And a special thank you, brother
and sister, Mark and Arienna Cicchella for seeing that all mothers received their carnations. Our next event will be Fathers Day Breakfast in the Park on
Saturday June 20, 2009. We look to have over 100 people next time. As always, the pictures tell the story better than
words. Also
it was suggested that we think about having a Mexican Burrito evening event at the park. When asked if anyone would
be interested, everyone welcomed the idea with a rousing YESSSSS! So stay tuned. Click here to view pictures.
Fathers
Day Breakfast June 20, 2009 The Fathers Day Breakfast in the park got underway promptly at 9:00 AM Saturday
morning. By 10:30 we had served over 100 people. A big thank you to all that supported us by attending.
We could not have pulled off this successful event for our community without the hard work of Linda & Tom, Becky
& Tom, Jean & Tony, Matt & Angela, Mike, Bubbles, and Connie. And of course, another big thank you to Mark
and Arienna for seeing to it that every Father received a cigar (bubble gum) and an artificial fishing worm. Also thanks to
the Gulf Cove Fishing Club for the use of their folding tables. Five very nice door prizes were given away and Steven
Wodarski won $36.00 from the 50/50 raffle. A welcome addition to our menu was a wonderful hash-brown casserole
provided by Angela Cicchella. Also several people had their first taste of cappauchino from Linda & Tom's cappauchino
machine. Click here to view pictures.
July
4th Picnic July 4,2009
POGC's annual 4th of July Picnic in the Park on Saturday July
4, 2009 lived up to all expectations. These picnics seem to be really catching on as we exceeded our turn out from last
year by a good ten percent. Our hard working team really out did themselves this year. If these picnics keep growing
we may have to think about expanding the size of the pavilion. There are just too many people to thank for its success
and I am sure everyone knows who they are. However, we must thank all our members and guests, who were in attendance,
for their continued participation and support. A special thank you goes to Linda Pollock for her hard work in obtaining
over 20 very nice door prizes and her generosity for donating her 50/50 winnings back to the events fund. Click here to view pictures.
Labor
Day Picnic Spetmber 7, 2009 Wow!!
What a turnout, the most of all our events this year. Over 115 people. It just keeps getting better. Everyone
had a terrific time. Three new pledges for membership in POGC. Plenty of food, beautiful weather, plenty of door
prizes, and a serious horseshoe match. The four new corner fans helped greatly even with their temporary mounting.
We really missed our Master of Ceremony Carl Strong who was feeling a little under the weather and could not make it.
Get well Carl. Thanks to all who donated their time to put this Labor Day picnic together. A big thank you to
Mike Donohue and Gasparilla Plumbing for donating 10 big bags of ice for our coolers. Also a very special thank you
to Tom Wirth who won the 50/50 raffle of $78.00 and then donated it back to POGC. Thanks to Chuck Lockwood who won a
very special NFL plaque of Miami Dolphin Quarterback Dan Marino and then donated back to POGC to be sold at our Christmas
Bazaar and Flea Market on December 5, 2009. Again, as always, with the generous donations from our members and guests
we have money to fund our next event without using POGC money. Everyone is looking forward to our next event.

Myakka River Cruise November 29, 2009 The weather was great and the
tide was up today as four boats from the Myakka River Boat Club met at Marker One up river for an afternoon cruise up the
Scenic Myakka River. In no real hurry we cruised at minimal wake speed up to the Big Slough Canal and then up to the
US 41 bridge. There we made a U turn and cruised down to a secluded inlet to anchor for our raftup. Then we sat
back and enjoyed the company of some great friends not seen for a while. Snacks and liquid refreshments were a plenty,
as every shared what they brought. Conversations got everyone caught up on what was happening in all our lives but also
included a little playful ribbing of a few. After about an hour or so the sun started getting low in the western sky
so we decided reluctanly to break up and head home. What a great cruise, being on the water with friends and seeing
all kinds of wildlife. We really should do this more often and more people should join in. Thanks again to Mike
Donohue for putting this cruise together. See you on our next cruise. Click here to view pictures.
Christmas
Bazaar & Flea Market December
12, 2009 The POGC Christmas Bazaar & Flea Market was held today and again, like the March Flea Market,
was a big success. A few Vendor no shows because of the postponed date but the ones that did show up were treated to
great weather. Warm sun with a nice breese, just a beautiful day. This time around the concession stand did not
run out of hot dogs, chips , or sodas. As usual the day got started before daylight with Honey Buns and Coffee.
About 9:30 am people were asking for hot dogs. Things started slowing down around 1:00 pm as customers started thinning
out and Vendors started packing up. We received many compliments on how well orginized the event was. Thanks to
Linda Pollock for all her hard work in organizing the whole affair. POGC had a combined 10 membership renewals and new
members. Several Boat Ramp Decals were sold also, and even some February Sweetheart Dinner Dance tickets. The
50/50 raffle was won by POGC Member Jim Gregory. Jim's share was $47.00. Thanks to Linda Pollock, Tom Lamoreaux,
Becky Wirth, Tom Wirth, Pat Johnson, Dave Cormier, Karen Cormier, Carl Strong, Ron Wozinak, Jean Mennenga, Jean Landreville,
Glen Wilkinson, and friend Dean Ruger for all their hard work and contributions. All this vision and hard work might
just payoff by putting a little more cash in the bank. We will know when all the numbers are in. Whew, what a
day. Click here to view pictures.
